#1 Honeywell QuietSet Whole Room Tower Fan HYF290B
Tower fans can make a lot of noise, which could be a problem if they are being used while you sleep or binge-watch your favorite TV programs. The Honeywell QuietSet, which was the quietest fan I tested, was also a very well-rounded appliance.
The QuietSet was one of the most efficient fans I tested, drawing only 36 watts at full blast. This is in addition to keeping its highest-speed setting at a class-leading 41 decibels (measured at 30 inches distance). The QuietSet comes with a variety of settings. These settings include a 26-decibel, quiet Sleep setting and a 28-decibel White Noise setting. You can also choose from Relax, Refresh or Cool settings to move more air while keeping noise levels low. The sleek, rocket-shaped design of the QuietSet is strong and compact. When not in use, the remote control battery pack can be stored in the back. The upward-angled controls at the top are easy on your eyes. You can adjust the brightness of the LED lights at the top.
#2 Dyson Pure CoolTM T04 Air Purifying Tower Fan
Dyson is the undisputed leader in ultra-high-end tower fans. Dyson’s latest model, the Dyson TP04 (a $750 beast), features king-sized activated carbon and HEPA air filters that hugged the base intake. It purifies the air it produces, removing allergens such as dust and pollens. Dyson claims it can catch particles as small as 0.3 micron wide (and before you Google it, a single coronavirus molecule is 0.125 micron wide, and it’s worth adding that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently notes that most COVID-19 transmission comes from person-to-person contact). Just know that if it’s an air purifier you’re after, you can find lots of good options that cost less, as my colleague David Priest can attest.
The Dyson has 10 speed settings, ranging from a quiet 28 decibels to a powerful 48-decibel blast. The Dyson tower fan was also the most comfortable I tried. It produces a steady stream of cool air that feels similar to a Dyson’s bathroom hand dryers but with less force. The LCD screen on the front monitors air quality and can be set to display the ambient temperature or relative humidity. You can adjust the oscillation angle to 45-, 90 -, 180 – and 350-degrees. This is a unique feature. When you’re not using the fan, the remote control docks magnetically to the top of it.
TP04 is also compatible with smart phones. Although I didn’t spend much time testing the features, the app provides a detailed view of your home’s air quality and allows you to create custom cooling schedules. It allows you to change the fan’s automaticpilot mode to your liking. The TP04 supports voice control via Siri or Alexa.
#3 Comfort Zone 29 Inch Oscillating Tower Fan
Comfort Zone’s Oscillating Tower Fan costs less than what you would normally pay for a tower fan. You can choose from low, medium and high speeds, as well oscillating options. It will keep you cool and your budget in check.
This fan measures 29 inches in height, so it can be used on a table or floor. It is ideal for cooling a small space or crowded area. Comfort Zone’s tower fan can be run all night long despite its high speed setting.
#4 hOmeLabs 40 inch Oscillating Tower Fan
Oscillation (when a fan turns backward and forth) helps to move air throughout a room. This model is from hOmeLabs, and it is one of their best oscillating tower fans. The fan’s 40-inch diameter allows for large oscillation to push air over a larger area. It also has three speeds and three wind modes, including oscillation, natural, and sleep.
The tower fan features an easy-to use LED control panel at the top. It also includes a remote control that can be used up to 16 feet away. The remote can attach magnetically to the base for storage. The fan can be programmed to shut off automatically after a set time. This includes a timer that allows for the fan to go off after a period of one, two, four or eight hours.
#5 Seville Classics UltraSlimline 40 in. Oscillating Tower Fan With Steel Intake Grill
Many fans offer just a few preset timer options—typically one, two, four, and eight hours—but with the Seville Classics UltraSlimline Tower Fan, you can customize the shut-off timer to better suit your needs. The programmable timer on this model can be set in increments of 30 minutes, so you can adjust it from 30 minutes up to 7.5 hours.
Additionally, this tower fan has three-speed settings and three fan modes—constant, natural, and sleep. The fan oscillates at 115 degrees to cool your room. It also has three tilt settings that allow for you to alter the direction of the airflow. The unit’s sleek design is a bonus, as the tilt feature is great for rooms with high ceilings.
#6 Hunter 36 In. Digital Oscillating Tower Fan
For a tower fan that you can use in your bedroom at night, you may want to consider the Hunter Home Comfort Oscillation Tower Fan. This model stands 36” high, and in addition to various speed settings and optional oscillation, it offers three modes, including one for sleep.
You can adjust the fan’s speed to high, medium, and low. The remote can also be used to control the fan while you are sleeping. There’s a one, two, or four hour timer, as well as normal, natural, and sleep modes. Its lightweight design makes it easy and convenient to transport around your home.
#7 Vornado 184 41″ Tower Circulator
Smaller tower fans might not be powerful enough to cool down a large room, in which case you’ll want a product like the Vornado Whole Room V-Flow Tower Circulator. This fan has a powerful motor with a unique design that allows it move up to 500 cubic yards of air per minute. It can also cool down large areas by pushing air up to 100ft.
The fan measures 41 inches in height and has four speeds that you can adjust via the remote control. Despite its powerful airflow, it is quiet to operate. It has a solid base that eliminates wobbling. You can also set the built-in timer so it will shut off after one to eight hours. You’ll barely hear this fan running and that it does a good job circulating air around large spaces.
#8 Lasko 42″ Wind Curve with Fresh Air Ionizer
When your tower fan has a remote control, you can easily adjust its settings from across the room—helpful if you’re watching TV or going to bed. The Lasko Wind Curve Oscillating Tower Fan has one of the best remote controls that you’ll find, as it allows you to control every one of the fan’s settings from a distance.
This fan tower measures 42 inches in diameter and offers full room coverage with three speeds. There’s even a nighttime setting that automatically decreases the fan speed and dims the control lights. The Lasko fan comes with a timer feature that allows you to set a timer between 30 minutes and 7 hours. Additionally, the multi-function remote can be stored in the compartment on the back.
